Studio Membership

Studio membership & class registration opens on the 15th of each month for the following month. The foundation of Good Dirt is studio membership - which means belonging to a community, having a built-in support structure and a way to connect and grow, explore and play. Studio Membership is your way to join a creative, joyful, supportive and artistic community and fall in love with the art of pottery, while working independently and on your own schedule.

What is included in the membership?

Our goal is to provide our Independent Studio artists with support and creative inspiration. Here's what's included in your membership to support your creativity:

  • 24-hour Access to the studio & all of our equipment to practice & create (studio reservations required during COVID)

  • YouTube Tutorials covering a range of topics to help guide and support your independent learning!

When is registration & Who can join?

Registration for studio membership opens on the 15th of each month for the following month. So, June membership begins registration on May 15th, July membership begins registration on June 15th and so on and so forth. Membership is offered 1 month at a time, running from the first of the month til the last day of the month. We don't offer partial months or studio time by the week.

You need to have taken a class with us before you can register for studio membership, since you'll be working without instruction or supervision in the studio. Any of our classes except for Try Clay count as enough experience to register for studio time, since they will have included studio procedures. Another option if you don't have any experience is to reach out to us and set up private lessons alongside studio membership. You can register for any of our 4-week classes without experience o membership if you don't have experience.

Is this a contract thing....?

Nope. You can enroll for one month. Or continue on for a zillion. We don't make you commit to anything beyond a month at a time. We're not trying to strong arm you ("LOVE POTTERY NOW!"), this is more about committing to the best possible environment for you to learn. It is about community and support and having access to all the tools you'll need to get exactly where you want to go.

What about some extra help/learning opportunities?

You've got a few options to level-up your abilities:

  • One-on-one private lessons on whatever you'd like, at whatever pace you want. Private lessons are for members only and not a standalone offering.
  • We also offer 4-week long classes, with a new schedule of topics every month. These are more intensive, deeper ways to build skills and abilities on a number of topics. You can check out the offerings for the month on the registration page. We teach handbuilding, wheel, sculpture, surface decoration, alternative firings...all sorts of topics for all levels. Registration opens on the 15th of each month for the next month (so classes in July will register starting June 15th, classes in August will register starting July 15th, etc). You can read more about classes HERE.
  • You can take a present or past virtual class. All past "class packs" (what we call our virtual classes) are available to purchase. Email us if you'd like to get started2. Current virtual offerings will be listed alongside the 4 week classes and noted as virtual.

Do I need to pay for studio membership if I'm working from home & only bringing stuff in to glaze?

Yes. If you'd like access to our glazes and kilns, you need to be a member. The $35/bag cost for clay doesn't cover the actual costs to mix glazes, pay our studio manager, pay utilities, etc. We work on the honor system and give trust to our community. We ask that you help us keep our doors open by not using more resources than you pay for.

Do you offer scholarships?

Yes, yes, and yes! We don't want finances to keep anyone from the deeply healing, restorative, and therapeutic benefits of creating. Even though we aren't currently thriving during COVID, it is our mission to help you if you need it. Just reflect and make sure that it is "need" and not "discomfort". We will only be able to do this for a handful of people. If you need it, you need it. We all need help sometimes, and we want to be there for you. You will not need to "prove" anything to receive help. We believe you. But, if you can pay, you are supporting us, which means we can support more members of the community that have genuine need.

Can I apply credit from a COVID canceled 8-week class from Spring?

Absolutely. We can transfer your class credit to Independent Studio and clay. If you were enrolled in a Beginner class, we'll apply the credit towards some private lessons as well, to get you caught up. Shoot us an email and we can get you all set up on our end, and let us know any questions that you might have.

Thank you all for your support. You are LITERALLY how our doors are staying open and our kilns are staying running. We've missed all of you more than you know. We miss teaching you. We miss hugging you. We miss seeing what incredible work you’re making. If you have questions, thoughts, needs, or just want to say hello, drop us a line anytime.

With love (and a whole lot of gratitude),

Rob & Jess
